Oscar Pistorius Charged With Murder in Shooting Girlfriend (Photo) Feb 14th 2013, 19:13 Oscar Pistorius, who made sporting history by becoming the first double amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics, was charged with murder on Thursday after a woman was fatally shot in his home. Pistorius, 26, and his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, had been the only people in the house at the time of the shooting, police brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters, adding witnesses had been interviewed about the early morning incident. “We are talking about neighbors and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place,” Beukes said. Early reports suggested that Steenkamp may have been attempting to surprise Pistorius on Valentine’s Day, only to be taken as a burglar by a guy known to respond to security alarms by “grabb[ing] his gun and tiptoe[ing] downstairs.” But police officials have resisted those rumors, telling reporters that officers had been called to his home before over “complaints of a ‘domestic nature.’” Pistorius found fame during last summer's London Olympics when he became the first double leg amputee to compete in the prestigious sporting event. He earned the nickname the "Blade Runner" for his high-tech prostheses. I admired him, how tragic.
